Teen Alcohol Use in Fremont

According to the National Cops Organizational Evaluation Change Case Study, Fremont is a wealthy community that is made up of individuals with Caucasian and Asian backgrounds. Despite its status as an affluent area, Fremont faces some of the same problems as cities across the nation – namely teen alcohol use.

Although crime rates are low amongst Fremont’s population of 200,000, there is concern about the future of their youth, partially due to teen drinking. Recently, a grant was issued to have a member of the police force act at a School Resource Officer. Violence, drug use and underage drinking were the motivations behind the initiative.

Teen Alcohol Abuse Information

The following statistics were published by Students Against Drunk Driving, a national non-profit focused on educating adolescents.

• Every month, 17 percent of America’s teens binge drink.
• Thirty percent of teenagers who binge drink are Caucasian, which is a primary racial group in Fremont.
• Twelve percent of individuals over the age of 12 have gotten behind the wheel while intoxicated in the past year.
• Thirty-two percent of traffic-related deaths occurred due to drunk driving.
• Twenty-one percent of teens who had sex for the first time used alcohol or drugs before doing so.

The goal of Fremont’s School Resource Officer program is to ensure that teens make smarter choices. Education can help prevent teens from starting drinking, particularly if they understand the long-term consequences associated with alcohol use and abuse.

Consequences of Teen Alcohol Use

Teens who abuse alcohol can experience a variety of both short- and long-term consequences. The longer the teen abuses alcohol, the more likely it is that he or she will experience poor results.

• Teens who drink have an increased likelihood of abusing other drugs, such as marijuana and heroin
• When teens drink regularly, they are less likely to complete their education, often dropping out of high school.
• Teen alcohol use increases the chances of teen depression, health issues and suicide.
