The following statistics from the 2009 Adult Arrestee Drug Use in the San Diego Region Report outline the severity of the issue in the area. These statistics show that there is a very strong correlation between drug use and other crimes.

• In 2009, many individuals arrested for various crimes tested positive for drug use – specifically, 56 percent of males and 65 percent of females.
• Meth is a drug that is commonly smuggled from Mexico. Statistics indicate that use rates were lower than years prior, but were still two percent higher for males and seven percent higher for females than in 2008.
• One-fifth of individuals arrested for a crime in San Diego had visited the emergency room as a result of drug or alcohol use.
• Very few individuals arrested had health insurance – fewer than two in five.
• Prescription drugs were heavily used by individuals who were arrested in San Diego in 2009. OxyContin was the most popular but two in five people reported illegal abuse of prescription drugs in general.
• Most individuals abusing drugs admitted that their drug use began with marijuana. These individuals were more likely to begin a cycle of drug abuse if they had parents who were using drugs when they were young.
• More than 50 percent of individuals arrested were unemployed and about half had found themselves without a home.
• Shoplifting and vandalism were the most common crimes committed by those arrested while under the influence of drugs.

Once they recognize what their drug use and criminal lifestyle is doing to their loved ones, they may be more willing to go to rehab.
